What's the Best Age to Visit an Orthodontist?
December 18, 2024
Your child may be all set up with their pediatrician and their pediatric dentist, but what about when it comes to their orthodontist? You may think it’s mostly pre-teens and teens who visit the orthodontist’s office. In fact, it’s actually beneficial to bring your child in far earlier than that. And although many of our patients are teens, a sizable number are adults! It's never too late to visit an orthodontist yourself if the alignment of your teeth bothers you.
When to Schedule Your Child’s Orthodontist Visit
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, your child should see an orthodontist by the time they’re seven years old. This is right around when a child is expected to start losing their baby teeth. Summit Family Orthodontics can monitor any potential problems with alignment. This includes keeping tabs on a child’s jaw growth, watching for the early or late loss of baby teeth, and making sure permanent teeth come in correctly. Any of these issues can negatively affect the position of teeth. Our dental professionals offer different types of early intervention appliances that can make it easier to correct malocclusion in our young patients.
Adult Orthodontics
If you didn’t have access to orthodontic treatment as a child, it’s not too late to get the smile you’ve always dreamed of having! Many people don’t realize that it’s possible to get orthodontics even as an adult. While you may be hesitant to get a more visible treatment like conventional braces, options like Invisalign® are a great choice for older patients who want to straighten their teeth in a discreet manner.
