The Different Types of Braces

December 18, 2024

Braces work by exerting constant pressure on the teeth to move your teeth into their new, more desirable positions. Straightening teeth can have both cosmetic and preventive goals. Are you considering orthodontic work to improve your smile? Below, we explore different kinds of braces.

Metal Braces

Modern metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than their predecessors. Metal braces consist of an archwire, brackets, and elastic bands to exert pressure on the teeth. Although metal braces are more noticeable than other orthodontic options, they tend to be more versatile and cost-effective than more inconspicuous options.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are made of tooth-colored ceramic brackets. These realign teeth as effectively as metal braces but the ceramic material blends in better with the teeth. However, their larger size can make them less comfortable and more difficult to clean for some patients, and the ceramic can be susceptible to staining and discoloration if adequate cleaning isn’t performed.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces can be made of either porcelain or metal. Their biggest advantage is the use of doors or clips to hold the wires in place. With easier cleaning, less friction, and a short treatment time, these appeal to patients who would have difficulty cleaning regular braces or are highly sensitive. If cost is a big concern, this may not be the best option.
