Common Orthodontic Issues
December 18, 2024
While everyone may dream of having a perfectly straight smile, everyone isn’t dealing with the same type of orthodontic issue. The fact is, there are many different situations that can occur with the alignment of teeth that may prompt someone to seek orthodontic treatment. Here are some of the most common problems that cause misaligned teeth.
Crowding
Crowding is when your teeth don’t have enough room to stay properly aligned so they grow in various directions rather than sitting neatly side by side. Some people don’t experience any crowding issues until their wisdom teeth come in, pushing the other teeth out of place. Other people experience crowding early on and may even need to get a tooth removed so the other teeth can fit correctly.
Bad Bite
A so-called "bad bite" is when the upper and lower teeth don't align properly. Even within this category, there is some differentiation. There is an underbite where the lower teeth jut out past the upper teeth, there’s an overbite where the opposite is true, and there’s an open bite where the upper and lower teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed.
Spacing Issues
Spacing is another common orthodontic problem. This is when there are one or more gaps between your teeth of various sizes. These gaps may be due to genetics, or they can be a result of outside factors like a prolonged thumb-sucking habit. Since teeth are constantly moving as we get older, it’s possible that these gaps can change in size over time.
