Orthodontic Health - It's More Than Just Cosmetic

December 18, 2024

October is National Orthodontic Health Month. To celebrate, Summit Family Orthodontics wants to educate our patients on some of the reasons why orthodontic care is so important. Many patients pursue orthodontic treatment to enhance the appearance of their smile and make it look more symmetrical. However, there are many other important reasons to schedule an orthodontic consultation and begin your journey toward straighter teeth.

Fixing Overbites & Underbites

Overbites and underbites can change the overall look of a patient’s face, but that’s not the only reason that they need to be corrected. When a patient’s upper jaw or lower jaw is not lined up correctly, it can make it unnecessarily difficult for the patient to chew properly. This can also cause certain teeth to become more worn down over time. The patient may also develop a lisp or have trouble speaking. Correcting an individual’s bite can make a huge difference in many aspects of their life and health.

Relieving TMJ/TMD

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a condition that is commonly characterized by pain or soreness in the jaw, face, and ears. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge joint that attaches the jaw to the skull. When a patient has crooked teeth, they may unintentionally put more pressure on one of their temporomandibular joints than the other. This can happen when they chew, talk, clench or grind their teeth. Using a custom mouthguard and/or orthodontic treatment could be the key to relieving your TMJ pain.

Straight Teeth Are Easier to Keep Clean

When a tooth overlaps another tooth, it can be difficult to clean both teeth thoroughly. This can result in plaque buildup, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. By straightening out each tooth, patients can easily reach all areas of their teeth when they brush and floss. Getting braces sooner rather than later can lead to needing less dental work in the long run. That will save time and money and lead to a healthier smile overall.
