Braces yield beautiful results, but at times the journey to achieve that new smile is uncomfortable and even painful. If you, your child, or another loved one is dealing with pain from braces, here are some things you can do at home to ease the discomfort.

  • Orthodontic Wax
  • Braces-related pain and discomfort is often due to the brackets and wires poking, and even cutting, the inside of the cheeks or lips. If that’s the case, orthodontic wax can help keep the sharp and jagged bits from coming into contact with the soft tissue in your mouth. You can use this soft wax to cover any areas that are causing irritation and pain.

  • Warm Salt Water Rinse
  • If the braces do scratch up the inside of your cheeks and lips, you may find relief by swishing warm, salty water around in your mouth. This method can also help to reduce any related swelling or inflammation.

  • Stick to Soft Foods
  • Don’t exacerbate your mouth pain and sensitivity by eating hard, tough, or chewy foods. Soft foods will be a lot easier on your mouth. Low-sugar yogurt, soups, mashed fruits and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, smoothies, and pasta are all smart choices.

  • Keep It Cool
  • You may find a cool ice pack or cool wash cloth comforting if you’re experiencing any swelling or irritation related to braces. Cold foods, like low-sugar ice cream and smoothies, can also do the trick. But whatever you do, don’t chew on an ice cube or you’ll risk breaking your braces.

  • Over-The-Counter Pain Medications
  • For many patients, there’s nothing that works quite as well as an over-the-counter pain medication. You’ll likely find that this is especially true when the braces are first put on or after a tightening. Just be sure to follow the medication's label to keep yourself safe.
