The Dos & Don’ts of Braces Maintenance
November 30, 2023 11:29 pmDo you have crooked or uneven teeth? Getting braces is a transformative process and one of the best things you can do to improve the appearance and alignment of your teeth. During your orthodontic treatment, there are a few things you should do to care for your teeth and braces, thus optimizing your treatment.
For example, we recommend that patients with braces:
Brush & Floss Regularly
Prioritize a consistent and thorough oral hygiene routine. Cleaning around your brackets and under the archwire can be tricky but neglecting these areas can lead to plaque buildup and potential dental issues. Brushing in the morning, before bedtime, and after every meal helps prevent food particles from lingering in your braces. Flossing, though a bit more challenging with braces, is essential to reach spaces between teeth that your toothbrush may miss. Floss threaders, a water flosser, and interdental brushes can make cleaning around your braces easier.
Use Orthodontic Wax
Orthodontic wax is your friend when it comes to alleviating discomfort caused by braces. If wires or brackets irritate the inside of your mouth, applying a small amount of wax to your braces provides a protective barrier to prevent further irritation.
Attend Regular Orthodontic Checkups
Regular appointments are crucial for monitoring the progress of your treatment. These visits allow for necessary adjustments to your braces so they can effectively move your teeth into the desired positions. Skipping appointments can hinder the progress of your braces and may result in a longer treatment time.
Avoid Chewing Hard Objects
Resist the urge to chew on pens, pencils, ice, or any other hard objects. Doing so can damage the brackets and wires, setting back your orthodontic progress and potentially causing discomfort. Additionally, do not chew gum or bite into hard foods, like raw carrots, whole apples, nuts, and chewy bread.
