How To Deal With Stress

Did you know that you can develop oral health problems from average, everyday stress levels and anxiety? And while you may think you’re the only one who notices, often the first person to see any signs or symptoms is your dentist! In order to protect your smile, watch out for these common oral health issues, caused by stress.

What’s The Connection?
According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there’s a direct connection between anxiety and our oral health. Long-term stress can lead to chronically elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune system. When your immune system becomes weak, it’s unable to protect your body from bacteria and any plaque buildup on your teeth. Keep an eye out for these other dental health conditions that could follow:
•Canker sores.
•Teeth grinding (Bruxism).
•Dry mouth.
•TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction).
•Gum disease.

Protecting Your Oral Health
A certain level of stress is inevitable; gum disease is not. If you’re experiencing a high level of stress, take preventative measures to protect your oral health.
•Brush twice a day, for two minutes.
•Floss daily.
•Schedule regular dental appointments.
•Eat a healthy (and tooth-friendly) diet.
Exercise at least four to five days every week.
•Get plenty of sleep.

One of the most serious consequences of stress is its potential to derail your oral hygiene routine, so make sure you keep up with your oral care (even while wearing braces).
