Help Your Child Live With Braces

Living with braces is no easy task, especially for young kids. They can be uncomfortable, time consuming, and overwhelming. Luckily, there are ways to make braces a little bit more manageable for your little ones. Keep these helpful tips in mind when you come across one of these typical areas of concern.

Cleaning Regimen
While your kids should still be brushing in the morning, have them take care of their entire cleaning routine at night – brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. Flossing sufficiently can end up taking several minutes due to the restrictions of the wires and brackets. If they attempt this in the morning, they may end up late for school!

Rubber Bands
Be prepared and have your kids carry extra bands with them. Rubber bands can wear easily, so they should be replaced often – especially after every meal. They may make their mouth sore, but being persistent will keep the treatment progressing.

Loose or Broken Wires/Brackets
If a wire or bracket breaks or becomes loose don’t panic, just contact your orthodontist. Do not try to bend or break off any loose or partially broken pieces. Cover them with wax or a wet cotton ball and let the professionals handle the rest.

Discomfort or Soreness
The cheeks, lips, and tongue must adjust to braces, so it’s normal for the mouth to be aggravated. Kids can alleviate the irritation by applying wax to the braces and rinsing their mouth with warm salt-water.

Feeling Self Conscious
Most kids (and even adults!) become self conscious when they get braces, but encourage them to smile! Braces are extremely common and the short term treatment is worth a lifetime with a beautiful and healthy smile!
