Have you ever felt lost or confused while speaking with one of your doctors? You’re not alone. There are copious medical terms that often get lost in translation in the doctor’s office. Since more than one million people in North America received braces last year, we think it’s time to learn some common orthodontic terms.
Archwire – This adjustable wire is attached to the brackets. The pressure that’s gradually applied is responsible for moving your teeth.
Bracket – This is the ‘brace’ in braces. A bracket is a fastener that’s attached with cement to the teeth’s surface.
Debonding – Once your orthodontic treatment is complete, it’s time for your braces to come off! The debonding process will remove the brackets from your teeth.
Elastics – Small elastics, or rubber bands, are used to create a continuous force that moves the teeth to the desired position. Elastics are available in many colors, allowing patients to personalize their treatment.
Extractions – In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted from your mouth before you receive orthodontic treatment. This happens when there isn’t enough space for your teeth to reach its proper alignment.
Lingual – This term is used to describe surfaces and directions towards the tongue. For instance, the lingual side of a tooth is the backside of the tooth or the side of the tooth facing the tongue.
Malocclusion – Malocclusion refers to the misalignment of teeth and is most often hereditary. Due to dietary and genetic changes, one in five people have some type of malocclusion or dental crowding.
